So there I was wandering around the Sydney foreshore, taking in the wonderful harbour views, when I spotted a low, sleek submarine tied up next to a small warship, and they were both covered in civvies! What’s this? I had stumbled on the Australian National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour, just around the corner from the Big Coathanger.

This place is a real gem. The displays are excellent, involving and informative. There are all kinds of vessels on show including racing yachts, Pacific Island canoes, the warship and sub (you can crawl all over both of these!), a lightship, ferry and sailing boats.

There are displays depicting Australia’s naval and military history, early colonisation, indiginous seafaring, sport and recreational sailing and just about every aspect of maritime life.

So why have I included it in this list? Because there is a wonderfully restored Wessex hanging in the main display area. Yes, hanging. From the ceiling.

If you are kicking around Sydney down by the Bridge, this is well worth checking out!

You can see my pics of the Wessex here
