The Eisenbahnmuseum Historische Hafenbahn in Hamburg is a fascinating destination for rail enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Established in 2020, the museum focuses on showcasing the rich railway history of Hamburg, particularly its historical port railway. Considering the location and the impressive buildings in the precinct, I was expecting a fairly traditional railway museum housed in old railway buildings. This is not that. It is an outdoor assembly of old railway and dock gear, much of it in poor condition. It does feel a bit like a dumping ground for equipment that has been saved from the scrappy. It is fascinating, nonetheless and I enjoyed my visit. It is tricky to get to without a car. I hired an e-scooter, but had to abandon that a couple of kilometres from the museum at the edge of the valid riding area, and walked the rest of the way. I did walk all the way back into Hamburg central after my visit, so it’s not like it is out in the sticks. There is no cost to just wander around the locos, cranes and rolling stock. There is a maritime museum here as well with some interesting boats. I tried to buy a ticket, but I could not find where to do that, so I missed the boats. There are also bungie jumps from the top of a dock crane on offer, if you are into that sort of thing.
