Eurocopter Tiger Walkaround Gallery
I shot this Tiger walkaround at Avalon in 2007.
The Eurocopter Tiger ARH (Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter) is the Australian Army's new baby. There are 22 of these on order and deliveries started late 2004 with this particular chopper, A38-001. She has been allocated to ARDU (Aircraft Research and Development Unit) and was the first to conduct live Hellfire firing tests.
The Tiger is replacing the Kiowa / Iroquois in both the Observation and Armed Helo roles. It is the first time the ADF has had a dedicated modern anti-armour capability. Previous armed helicopters have been limited to the heavilly armed, but almost antique, UH-1H Bushranger gunships whose airframes and armament date from the Vietnam era, and the occasional mounting of machine guns on other choppers such as the Blackhawk for area suppression when inserting troops, and for self-defence on Squirrels used in the Gulf.
The process of selection started way back in 1993 with Project Air 87, which helps to explain the resulting technology gap! Unsuccessful tenders included an upgraded Bell AH-1Z Viper (Cobra development), Agusta A129 Scorpion, Boeing AH-64D Apache, the South African Denel Rooivalk / Red Hawk and the Sikorsky Battlehawk, an armed version of the Blackhawk.
The light green on the camo is unusual and I don't know that it is used on any other ADF schemes. The Blackhawk and Kiowa certainly use a much darker green. Notice also how patchy the paint is, you can quite clearly see the individual spray strokes. There is quite a bit of variation in the quality of these pics too. It was getting late in the day and the sun was very low. I have also adjusted the brightness and levels of many of them to bring up the detail under the black paint.
